My Name is Nigel Mark Cumberbatch. I was born on Friday, February 15,1963 in Georgetown, British Guiana. British Guiana was a British colony, part of the mainland British West Indies, which resides on the northern coast of South America.
I am a part of the “baby boomer” generation. – 1946 to 1964, during the post World War II baby boom. The boomers (short for baby boomers) are the demographic cohort following the Silent Generation and preceding Generation X. This generation is generally defined as people born from 1946 to 1964, during the post–World War II baby boom.
At birth I was named Nigel Mark Davidson. I was born out of wedlock and was given my mother’s maiden name. Since my mother preferred the name Mark, I used this as my call name throughout my childhood. I was called Mark Davidson until I was twenty-one years old. In fact my last name was Davidson even after my parents were married and both used Cumberbatch as their last names.
In 1984 I was advised by a Police friend of mine to change my last name to my father’s. This very year I won a government of Guyana scholarship to study Air traffic Control in Canada. This was the first time I flew from Guyana to another country.
I began using Nigel as my first name. Overnight, I went from Mark Davidson to Nigel Cumberbatch. Today if someone calls me Mark it is because they knew me for a very long time.
